Why Humble Leaders Rise

Feb 25, 2025

We often associate reaching the pinnacle of success with a certain level of swagger. The image of the boastful CEO, radiating self-importance, is a common trope. But in reality, true expertise, the kind that builds lasting credibility, is often accompanied by something quite different: humility.

And, that's what you'll observe in the video.  My interview with two traditional Aikido exponents, both having been awarded 7th dan status, is a lesson in leading, learning and humility.

Think about the most respected figures in your field. Are they constantly reminding you of their achievements? Or are they more likely to be engaged in thoughtful discussions, asking questions, and demonstrating a genuine curiosity?

The truth is, those who reach the top and maintain their credibility understand a fundamental principle: learning never stops. They recognise that their knowledge, however vast, is just a piece of a much larger puzzle. This understanding fosters a sense of humility, a recognition that there's always more to learn and that others have valuable insights to contribute.

How does this translate to effective business leadership?

  • Lifelong Learning: A leader who embraces lifelong learning encourages a culture of continuous improvement. They are open to new ideas, willing to admit when they don't know something, and prioritise personal and professional development. This fosters a team that is adaptable and innovative.
  • Active Listening: Humble leaders prioritise listening over talking. They value the perspectives of their team members, clients, and even competitors. This creates an environment of trust and collaboration, where everyone feels heard and valued.
  • Empowering Others: Leaders who are secure in their expertise don't feel threatened by the success of others. They empower their team members to take ownership, develop their skills, and contribute their unique talents. This creates a high-performing team that is motivated and engaged.
  • Focus on the Mission: True experts are driven by a passion for their field and a desire to make a meaningful contribution. They are less concerned with personal accolades and more focused on achieving the organisation's goals. This creates a sense of purpose and inspires others to work towards a common vision.

In a world that often celebrates self-promotion and self-interest, the quiet confidence of true expertise stands out. By embracing humility and a commitment to lifelong learning, leaders can build lasting credibility, foster a thriving team, and achieve sustainable success.
